The
new Cadillac Lyriq is a fully-electric SUV that comes with a stylish Cadillac exterior and a premium cabin. The real-life driving range is substantially less than the range you can get with a gasoline-powered Cadillac but if you’re just driving around town, you can reduce your range anxiety. What’s new for 2024?
The Lyriq lineup has been simplified for 2024 resulting in three trims starting with a base model powered by a 340-horsepower single electric motor. The driving range has dropped from an estimated 312 miles per charge to 308 miles which is considerably less than a comparable gas-powered Cadillac SUV. The standard Luxury trim has added some new features and the top-level Sport model has a more assertive exterior that includes a unique new grille.
EV Motors and Performance
The standard offering in the new Lyriq is the 340-horsepower electric motor mounted on the rear axle and rear-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive Lyriq can get to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds which is somewhat below competitors like the BMW iX. You can upgrade to a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain with a second motor on the front axle and you’ll get 500 horsepower. That version of the Lyriq can reach 60 mph in 4.6 seconds on highways around Sulphur LA Orange TX.
Driving range: Estimates vs. reality
The Cadillac lyric is based on GM's new Ultium EV battery technology that was launched last year. The Lyriq’s battery provides a 102.0-kilowatt capacity and gives you a driving range GM claims is 308 miles per charge with the single motor model and slightly less in the dual-motor version.
In the spirit of full disclosure, a real-world Car and Driver test revealed that the rear-wheel drive Lyriq can reach only 270 miles of range and the all-wheel drive model gives you only 220 miles of range. That's considerably below the 412 miles of driving range that's available with the average gas-powered vehicle and even those limited numbers are in ideal weather conditions. When you're operating in the very hot weather we get here around Moss Bluff and Jennings LA, your driving range can be even less.
Charging times
The new Cadillac Lyriq requires about 10.7 hours to be fully-charged with a 220-volt charger installed in your garage which is obviously far more than the five minutes it takes to fill the tank in a gas-powered Cadillac. You can try DC fast charging the new Lyriq but please be aware that public charging stations can be hard to find and don't always work properly. What's more, fast-charging can significantly shorten the life of your battery so it's better to do a full charge in your garage. The interior
The Lyriq comes with the same kind of premium interior quality that you'll find in our internal combustion Cadillac SUVs. There’s a big storage tray on the floor between the driver and the front passenger lined with leather upholstery. The new Lyriq has room for five passengers and the cabin is quiet. The interior is reasonably spacious but there isn't as much cargo room as in gas-powered Cadillac SUVs.
